What is a tax organizer?

Short answer

A tax organizer is the questionnaire and document checklist a firm sends clients before the season, usually pre-filled from last year, to gather what the return needs.

What it is

A tax organizer asks what changed since last year (dependents, address, jobs, property), lists the forms the client had last year so they know what to expect, and includes the questions the preparer must ask for credits and due diligence. Software produces one per client from the prior return.

Completion rates are the organizer's known weakness: long PDFs get ignored, and clients hand over a shoebox anyway. Shorter, mobile-friendly organizers, or a conversation-style intake over text, get more answers.

Why it matters for a tax firm

The organizer is where document collection starts. The more of it a client finishes before the first meeting, the fewer follow-up messages and the shorter the queue in March.

How XyloDocs handles it

XyloDocs turns the organizer's checklist into a running missing-documents list per client and chases the gaps by text or WhatsApp, in the client's language, instead of waiting for the PDF to come back.

Questions about Tax organizer

Why do clients not fill in the organizer?

It is long, it arrives in December, and it asks for things they have not received yet. Splitting it into a short questionnaire now and document requests as forms arrive works better.

Is an organizer required?

No. It is a practice tool. The due diligence questions it contains are required for certain credits, and those can be asked another documented way.
