What is Modernized e-File (MeF)?
Short answer
Modernized e-File (MeF) is the IRS system that receives e-filed individual and business returns, checks them against business rules, and accepts or rejects them.
What it is
MeF is the IRS's web-based e-file platform. Tax software converts a return into the IRS XML format and a Transmitter sends it to MeF, which validates the file, applies the business rules for that form, and returns an acknowledgement. Many states accept their returns through the same Fed/State channel.
Returns are accepted or rejected within minutes to hours. A rejection names the rule that failed, for example a dependent's SSN already used on another return, and the return can be corrected and resent.
Why it matters for a tax firm
Every e-filed return goes through MeF, so its calendar is the industry's calendar: it closes for maintenance in late autumn and reopens for the new season in January, and its business rules decide what gets through.
How XyloDocs handles it
The tax software XyloDocs plans for the 2027 season will connect to MeF directly: XyloDocs is the software developer and the transmitter, with no third party in between. The communication platform firms use today does not transmit returns.

Questions about Modernized e-File
Why was my client's return rejected?
MeF rejections come with a business rule code. The most common are mismatched names or SSNs, a dependent already claimed, or a prior-year AGI that does not match the IRS record when it was used to sign.
When does MeF close and reopen?
The IRS shuts individual e-file for annual maintenance in late November and reopens it in late January; business returns have a shorter break. Dates are announced each year.
